Juliet Aigbe (Chef Juls): A Trailblazer in Baking and African Grains Innovation
Juliet Aigbe, fondly known as Chef Juls, is an accomplished entrepreneur, baker, reformer and African grains expert whose journey is as inspiring as the flavours she creates. Her story is a remarkable fusion of culinary artistry and a deep-rooted passion for sustainable agriculture, shaped by her early experiences growing up in an agrarian family.
Raised in the heart of Agbo-oba in Ilorin, and a large farm in Oke-Oyi, Kwara State, Nigeria, Juliet spent her childhood surrounded by the rhythmic cycles of farming life. Her father’s millet and guinea corn farm left an indelible mark on her, instilling a love for grains and the cultural heritage they represent. These early years provided the foundation for a career that would eventually intertwine her love for baking with a commitment to championing African grains.
What began as a pastime—baking treats for friends and family—quickly turned into a calling. Juliet’s natural talent and innovative spirit transformed her hobby into a thriving business, Cakeflair, a brand renowned for its custom wedding cakes and sugarcraft. But it didn’t stop there. Juliet’s entrepreneurial journey took a pivotal turn when she revisited her roots, driven by nostalgia and a desire to promote the rich culinary potential of indigenous grains like millet, sorghum, and guinea corn.
Today, Chef Juls is a leading voice in the movement to incorporate African grains into modern baking. She founded the Domestic Grains Initiative, a platform dedicated to educating communities about the nutritional, economic, and cultural significance of indigenous grains. Through workshops, product development, and advocacy, Juliet has reimagined these traditional crops for contemporary use, creating innovative recipes that highlight their versatility and health benefits.
Her work bridges the gap between tradition and innovation, offering solutions for sustainable food systems while elevating African grains on the global stage. Juliet’s journey reflects a harmonious blend of artistry and purpose. She continues to inspire others with her entrepreneurial resilience and commitment to making a difference in both the culinary and agricultural landscapes.
